My Artist Name is Mayi (meaning ‘Ngiyampaa Person’ in Wangaaypuwan of the Ngiyampaa).
My Origin Rhyme:
I belong to the Bunya Bam of the Wakka Wakka [Mothers’ Mother],
I belong to the Dunghatti where the fresh water meets the salt water [Fathers’ Mother],
I belong to the Gamilaroi where Dhinawan flies [Mothers’ Father],
I belong to the Ngiyampaa where Ngunnuh lies [Fathers’ Father].
I have been performing in front of live audiences since I was 4yrs old. My first major performance was with my father and brothers, on stage with Yothu Yindi at the Entertainment Centre, Sydney, 1991. When I turned 20yrs old, I went to study at NAISDA College where I got my Certificate III in
Careers in Dance, 2008. I have also been, drawing and painting since I was a little girl. Since then, I have extended my skill set into MCing Events, Performing, Education, Weaving, Eco Dye, Wood Carving and Adornments.
I make First Nation coolamons, clapsticks, net bags, animal pelts, paintings, sculptures, wearable art. All of my work reflects my identity and connection to place. My art echoes the voices of my old people invoking individuality while promoting inclusivity. Art is my chosen story-telling platform, life doesn’t imitate art, life is art. A provocative introspective discussion that insights belonging which I explore through my interpretation of the old people.
Part of my way of honouring the old people is by harvesting all my own natural resources for making technology, wearable art, wooden & plant sculptures, using our old people’s methods
combined with modern methods.
