Rhythm of Pathways carries through generational movements between land, waters and community. Dennis uses his signature topographic patterning to create flowing lines of soundwaves and traces of the pathways of his family’s journey from Kamilaroi and Biripi lands to Gadigal and Bidjigal lands. Growing up travelling to and from Country, Dennis records the stories he heard on those journeys where each site becomes a living memory. He depicts this memory through a lined pattern that echoes off the rivers and roadways where they take place.
The colours shift as Country changes from the inland earth tones to river clay, saltwater blues, the flat earth to rising ranges, and low scrub to coastal rock. At the centre, two animals emerge from the linework itself. Guyiwan (shark) and Dhulaay (goanna) are motifs that symbolise the connection of his mother’s and father’s Country. Like many families who migrate to an adopted Country, this artwork explores how the natural and urban environments help shape identity, and belonging to community and place.
