The Three Brothers from the Bundjalung Dreamtime story of the same name, this artwork represents each brother through the Shield and the two Spears.
The three grouped lines in the shield represent the three rivers that these brothers came to settle at with their own families. Birrin at the Clarence River, Maamang at the Wilson River and Yarbrin at the Tweed River.
The single line on its own represents Gammi, the grandmother in the story.
Choosing to use modern symbols as the designs for the shield was a way to acknowledge that there were always traditional patterns used but to respect that these were sacred and it felt right not to try and copy any historical images found.
